It's been cra-zy

June has flown away at an insane rate!! I can't believe July is upon us already. I have been swimming in milk, who would have thought a newly freshened Jersey would really put out 9-gallons of milk?!!! I have mastered my 30-minute mozzarella in the last month, my yogurt is on point, farmhouse cheddar is always on the menu, we have butter to last the rest of the summer and ice cream to die for, but my goodness that's a lot of milk. I have been milking twice a day primarily to feed it to the chickens, who absolutely go ham by the way, but not really how I want to spend my time!
So, last night, I decided I was no longer going to milk a cow to to bottle feed a calf and just thought what is, is what will be, and reunited the two. I spent a good half hour watching the nervous mommy chasing around her super excited calf with loads of pent up energy. Totally worth it! This mama needed a break from 9-gallons, and that mama can take care of her babe.
Figuring out what works with a family milk cow, who once was a part of a dairy herd, is more difficult than I first imagined.
